Blogmemes

Blogmemes is a site for “transmission of cultural units,” which they have termed “memes.” It sounds complicated, but a meme is just a submitted link to a blog site, with tags, descriptions, trackbacks and anything else.

The site ranks entries and puts the best links at the top of the front page. Things that will get you on the front page include lots of comments, lots of views, lots of votes, and how recently the link was submitted. Blogmemes is totally democratic, and they let users decide what will go at the top.

Blogmemes is interesting if you have your own blog and you’d like to do some market research. On their front page you can not only look at the most popular, but the least popular blogs. Their ranking system is thorough, and you can look at all the different blogs’ stats and see what’s most popular.

Like the blogosphere itself, Blogmemes is a mixed bag. No one subject or topic dominates. On Blogmemes, you see less of the strictly tech stuff and less of the business-oriented sites, or at least fewer of them rank as the most popular.

Blogmemes has lots of cultural stuff, news stories, videos and sites offering pictures or other services. The categories and tags listed at the side of the front page are pretty varied; all kinds of topics are represented. Tags like “humor” and “literature” rank as most popular right alongside stuff like “software” and “internet.”

Through the “debate” function, you can agree or disagree, thus affecting the ranking of the blog link. When blogs are first submitted, they go into the “upcoming blogs” category to wait for somebody to read or rate them.

I couldn’t find any information on the site about what Blogmemes does or does not permit to be posted, and since it is a democratic site that is completely created and controlled by users, I assumed that anything is permissible. I saw lots of links to Myspace blogs and things like that, so it looks like it’s pretty much “anything goes.” They have some bug protection stuff, and users can report bugs if they find something wrong.

Blogmemes would be a great tool for promoting your blog site. There are lots of users and you can put lots of links on it.

Posting blogs to Blogmemes is easy, and you can use a bookmarklet function on your browser. If you have a Wordpress blog, you can install a plug in from Blogmemes that automatically posts each blog. This is a good tool for promoting your blog!
