This online marketing stuff can be VERY frustrating…

I should know, I spent a lot of time banging my head
against brick walls before I figured out what works
and more importantly, what doesn’t…

That was before I discovered the amazing world of
social bookmarking…

However, most people don’t know about it, and almost

Netscape for bookmark traffic

Everybody knows about Netscape, but you probably didn’t know that Netscape has their own social bookmarking site. It’s part of the “new Netscape.” The service has RSS feeds, voting, and media options where you can have a video from Netscape’s server stream through your website. Like other social bookmarking sites, you can share your favorite stories with other like-minded people.

In addition to a voting system and tags, Netscape also has “channels.” Each channel has its own ranking system, and the main page chooses the most popular stories from each channel to display. The story’s popularity is based on what rank it gets and how many comments there are.

Spurl for social bookmark traffic

Spurl is a social bookmarking site whose stated purpose is to help you keep from losing your work. You can keep track of all the sites you’ve looked at in one easily accessible place, where computer crashes and other catastrophes can’t get to them. Spurl has all the regular features of social bookmarking sites, including a feature that automatically uploads all the bookmarks that are stored on your computer.

Spurl’s “about” page has a website calculator that tells you how many sites you’ve looked at in your life. You enter in the date you started using the internet, how many sites you look at each day, and how long you spend on each site, and it tells you how much work you’ve done online. Even if you’re not interested in using Spurl, it’s kind of weird to try the calculator!

Unalog

Unalog is a social bookmarking site where users can create an account, save their favorite sites, and see what other people are saving. Your account can be public or private, and various search features help you sift through the web to find other sites you might like.

Unalog’s creators haven’t worked too hard to make it very flashy or exciting. The colors are white and grey, and everything is presented in a list that scrolls down. The front page lists the most recently added links in descending order starting with today. There doesn’t seem to be any rating system. Unalog doesn’t have a “most popular” page.

The World Wide Web contains masses of information, all piled up on top of each other, and the purpose of search engines is to sift through everything and find what you want. Raw Sugar has some unique search options that make finding exactly what you’re looking for easier.

After you do a simple search with Raw Sugar, you can refine your search by clicking on another tag that appears on the side of the screen. Raw Sugar has a hierarchical tag system, so that it will add the secondary tag to your search and look within the first search’s results. This is one feature that sets it apart from other social bookmarking sites.

Squidoo

With Squidoo, you create a “lens” and become a “lensmaster.” A lens is your own take on a particular topic, sort of like your own mini-webpage, with links to blogs and other websites. The point is that lenses help Squidoo users search; they find your lens on a particular subject and your lens tells them where to look for info.

You can make as many lenses as you’d like, one for each interest, if you want to. There are also ways built into Squidoo that you can make money, “royalties,” from your lenses.
